Brother PQ1600S Review: Fast Straight Stitching With Boundaries

The Brother PQ1600S is built around a deliberate restriction: one straight stitch, delivered at up to 1,500 stitches per minute with a large table and unusually adjustable feeding. That focus makes it attractive for quilts, bags and long seams—and unsuitable as the only machine in a workspace that needs zigzag, buttonholes or stretch construction.

Specialization is the feature

A single-stitch machine can feel liberating when every control serves fabric movement. The PQ1600S combines adjustable presser-foot pressure, four feed-dog height settings and a pin-feed mechanism. Owners report smooth work across quilts, denim bags, outdoor fabric, cork, vinyl, pleather and even thin satin after correct setup.

The pin feed is useful, but not a universal walking foot

Brother’s pin feed replaces normal feed-dog contact with a small pin that rises from below. It can help move quilt layers together or handle delicate nap without leaving broad feed-dog marks. It is not the same as a compound-feed industrial machine, where needle, inner foot and outer foot coordinate to move very demanding assemblies.

Fast sewing needs a slow commissioning session

The negative pool centers on upper threading, tension, broken needles and condition problems. One owner later found the tensioner had been threaded incorrectly; another calls the needle threader awkward until learned. Used or resale purchases account for several missing-part and damage complaints, so product condition should be separated from the design itself.

The 11.1×23.3-inch table supports the work near the needle, though a full quilt still benefits from a larger level surface.

The second-machine question

The PQ1600S is easiest to recommend beside a normal domestic machine or overlocker. It then handles the straight-seam workload while the companion provides zigzag, buttonholes and free-arm access. As an only machine, its purity becomes a limitation; as a focused workhorse, the supplied owner evidence gives it a strong case.

“Industrial-style” describes the workflow, not unlimited capacity

The PQ1600S uses a domestic portable body and standard power arrangement, even though its speed, cone stand and straight-stitch focus resemble a production station. It does not have the table-mounted motor, oil system or compound feed of a full industrial walking-foot machine. That makes it easier to place in a home studio, while also setting realistic limits for extremely thick leather assemblies and continuous commercial duty.

Routine care still matters. Lint from quilting and bag fabrics accumulates around the bobbin area, and high stitch counts make correct oiling or service intervals more important. Follow Brother’s current manual rather than improvising lubrication. A clean hook, fresh project-matched needle and unforced fabric path address many problems before tension controls should be changed.
