Brother XR3340 Refurbished Review: Table Versus Throat

Brother XR3340 Sewing Machine

A wide table can make the refurbished Brother XR3340 look larger than the sewing space inside its arm. Those are two separate measurements. This model deserves consideration for small quilting projects and mixed household sewing, but the table alone is not a reason to choose it for handling a large quilt.

Measure the opening before the tabletop

Brother specifies a 5.75-by-3.9-inch workspace. The original wide table supports material outside that opening. It cannot move the machine’s upright farther from the needle, so a bulky roll still has to fit through the same space.

Use a rolled version of your intended quilt sandwich to think through that limitation before buying. For patchwork blocks, small bags or ordinary garment seams, the internal opening may be less decisive. For repeated full-quilt handling, compare machines by throat dimensions rather than the overall width shown in their product photographs.

There is useful control behind the large stitch total

The XR3340 combines 140 sewing stitches with 55 lettering characters, eight one-step buttonholes and an advertised maximum of 850 stitches per minute. Speed control, start/stop sewing and needle-stop functions are practical reasons to consider it. A character library is a separate benefit from those daily controls, not 55 additional construction techniques.

Pressure is not user-adjustable on this model, and an automatic thread cutter is not part of its specification. If changing fabric behavior or frequent seam-end trimming is central to your work, examine those functions explicitly in a candidate such as the PS500. A higher stitch total does not fill a missing control requirement.

Inspect the table connection as carefully as the screen

  • Seat the table and check that the supporting legs stand evenly.
  • Confirm the supplied feet against the seller’s inventory, including the buttonhole foot.
  • Change stitch length and width on a suitable pattern and check that the display responds.
  • Try needle-stop and slow-speed sewing on scrap before introducing bulky fabric.

A refurbished listing should identify the machine’s condition and the remedy if an electronic control fails. Do not substitute an old manufacturer warranty statement for the seller’s current written terms. The ability to return an unsuitable machine has particular value when its physical workspace cannot be assessed in person first.

The sensible use case is compact, varied sewing

Choose the XR3340 for manageable projects that benefit from its electronic controls and verified accessories. For a package centered more explicitly on quilting feet, inspect the SQ9285 offer checklist. Neither choice should be promoted into a large-workspace machine simply by attaching its table.

This review interprets Brother’s specifications and XR3340 manual. It does not establish the condition of the refurbished machine offered by a particular seller.
